Current brain research indicates that our brains are hard-wired to either ignore things that don’t fit into our expectations and beliefs, or ‘reshape’ their meaning so that they do fit in. We evaluate what we hear in relation to our ow position, background, previous experiences and perceptions. We tend to hear what we expect to hear, see what we expect to see and think what we have always thought.
People tend to rise or sink to meet other’s expectations. If we think we know just what a person is going think, do or say because we’ve ‘met their type before’, or because all people of that ‘sort’ are the same, we will communicate those attitudes and beliefs in subtle ways. We will see the behavior we expect simply because we expect to see it, whether it’s really there or not.
